Legal Regulation of Manifestations on Social Networks

The Institute of State and Law of the Czech Academy of Sciences, v. v. i. is inviting you to a colloquium discussing the issue of legal regulation of manifestations on social networks and taking place on 19 September 2018 from 18:30 hours.

18:30 – 19:15 Regulation (freedom) of speech on social networks

Lecturer: Mgr. Bc. Monika Hanych, LL.M., Faculty of Law of Masaryk University and Office of the Government Delegate for Representation of the Czech Republic in the European Court of Human Right

Content of the contribution: Some European countries, such as Germany or France, adopted not long ago new legislation regulating various types of manifestations (hateful expressions, fake news, etc.) on social networks. How specifically do these laws function and how do they intervene in the freedom of speech? Is it an appropriate and reasonable step to protect democracy which is referred to as the purpose of the regulation? The regulation of the aforementioned has also been discussed recently in the Czech Republic. How are various types of illegal manifestations treated in the Czech Republic today? What legislation are they subject to and is it necessary to adopt a new Act to limit the freedom of speech on social networks?
